Halloween myths to enjoy and terrify!

Nobody can deny the fact that Halloween would not have been half as exciting without Halloween myths. Every Halloween we hear horrifying, gruesome tales about the dead and the supernatural beings with stories of black magic and bad witches coming alive in our minds to set the festive mood. Whether you believe in these stories or not or whether you try to challenge the dead or not, you simply cannot ignore these Halloween myths, especially as you hear people talk about them on the Halloween night!

One of the common Halloween myths that you would hear people talking about is the myth regarding ‘dumb supper’. This is a myth about having supper in complete silence, with an empty chair at the table, for inviting a spirit, probably of a deceased relative. The dead is supposed to come down and occupy the vacant chair with the rest of the people at the supper table itself.

There are a number of Halloween myths for unmarried girls too. For example there is a myth that if on the Halloween night, a girl goes to a spring of water holding a lamp, she is likely to see her life partner's reflection there. However, if she carries in a glass, a broken egg to the spring, she would see not only see her to-be-husband, but also see her future kids in the reflection. According to another myth, if she keeps one silver sixpence with rosemary herb under the pillow that night, she might have a dream of her life partner.

However, not all superstitions are as harmless as these. In fact there are Halloween myths too that better not be talked about in front of the weak hearted. One such myth is about chanting the verse ‘Bloody Mary!’ thirteen times. It is supposed to summon the vengeful sprit of the mirror witch, who comes down to attack, and even sometimes kill the one chanting the verse.

Another popular belief is that on the Halloween night one should not turn back if they hear someone’s footsteps trailing behind them. It could be the footsteps of the dead, and committing the error of turning around to see them might cause one to die soon.

There are other Halloween myths too that continue to linger in our minds even today in the modern era, and terrorize us completely. Some of them such as the jack-o-lantern are followed and believed in by some even today. This is the myth that finds people carving out a pumpkin for their houses every 31st of October. Another favorite myth associates black cats with foul witches hunting for small kids.

Just like nobody knows for certain how did Halloween start exactly, nobody really knows for sure where and how did these myths originate either. However, it is important to know that none of these Halloween myths have ever been proved to be true as such. There is no established truth in any of these superstitions. Therefore, they should never be taken too seriously.

For example there are many, generally kids, who tend to almost ruin the mood of festivity for themselves by rigidly considering some myths, that instead of adding fun to their Halloween, frightens them so much, that they get too sacred to enjoy themselves. So go share these Halloween myths with those you know and enjoy the thrill, but make sure you do not end up terrifying them too much either!
